The average American enjoys having pets around； and for good reason。 Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person's blood pressure。 Dogs can offer protection from burglars and unwele visitors。 Cats can help rid the home of unwanted pests。 Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide panionship and love。 In many cases； having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood。 Pets even encourage social relationships： They give their owners an appearance of friendliness； and they provide a good topic of conversation。
美国人一般都喜欢有宠物为伴，这是有原因的。研究人员发现，与动物为伍能够降低人的血压。狗能防止小偷及不受欢迎的访客。猫能帮忙清除家里讨人厌的害虫和有害的小动物。任何种类及大小的小宠物都能带给人们相伴与爱的感觉。很多时候，拥有一只宠物能帮助年轻夫妻做为人父母责任的准备。宠物甚至有助于人际关系：它们使主人们看起来更友善，并且也带给人们一个交谈的好话题。
Pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pie。 To Americans； pets are not just property； but a part of the family。 After all； pets are people； too。
宠物是美国文化中很基本的一部分，就如热狗和苹果派一样。对美国人而言，宠物不仅仅是他们所拥有的一样东西而已，它是家庭的一部分。毕竟，宠物也是「人」啊！

American houses usually have private kitchens； a living room and sometimes separate areas for eating and watching television。 A house usually has its own mailbox； a yard with plants or perhaps a lawn； and a place to store garbage out of sight。
美国住房通常有私人厨房，一个起居室，有时吃饭和看电视的地方是分开的。一所房子通常有自己的邮箱，一个种有植物，或者也许是草坪的院子，还有存放垃圾的地方。
A bungalow is a small house with one or two bedrooms and usually one bathroom。
平房是小房子，有一个或两个卧室，通常有一个浴室。
A mansion is a real big house with many bedrooms and several bathrooms。

A ranch house usually has three or four bedrooms。 The 〃master bedroom〃 for the mother and father usually has its own bathroom。

An apartment is usually one living space within a building。 Several apartment can be in the same building； with a shared yard； parking spaces； and garbage。

A town house is a two…floor apartment。 The kitchen； living room and dining room are usually on the first floor and the bedrooms are on the second floor。

Most American are happy to talk about their homes。 And if they've done anything special in their home； they'll let you know what it was； and maybe tell you what it cost to put in the Jacuzzi； deck or patio； etc。Most Americans live in cities； but nearly as many live in suburbs。 Suburban American has shopping centers called malls and residents usually need a care to get around。 Most of the houses in the suburbs are one or two stories tall； with private yards and gardens and garage。 There are few tall buildings in the suburbs。 Cities have neighborhoods； 〃warehouse〃 stores； and public transportation （bused； trains and taxis） is usually pretty good。 Private houses might only have a back yard； and if there is a garage it probably is small。 Cities have a lot of apartment buildings and some tall buildings may seem to 〃scrape the sky〃； so they are called 〃skyscraper〃。

Would you like to be a king or queen？ To have people waiting on you hand and foot？ Many Americans experience this royal treatment every day。 How？ By being customers。 The American idea of customer service is to make each customer the center of attention。 Need proof？ Just listen to the mercials。 Most of them sound like the McDonald's ad： 〃We do it all for you。〃 Actually； not all stores in America roll out the red carpet for their customers。 But wherever you go； good customer service means making customers feel special。
你想当国王或皇后吗？想有人把你服事得服服贴贴的吗？很多美国人每天都享受着皇室般的招待。怎样才能享受到呢？只要是顾客就可以了啊。美式的顾客服务就是使每一个顾客成为关注的焦点。需要证明吗？听听广告就知道了。大部份都很像麦当劳的广告一样：麦当劳都是为你。事实上，并不是所有美国的商店都待顾客如同上宾一般。不过无论你走到哪里，好的顾客服务就是让顾客觉得自己独特无比。
People going shopping in America can expect to be treated with respect from the very beginning。 Most places don't have a 〃furniture street〃 or a 〃puter road〃 which allow you to pare prices easily。 Instead； people often use the telephone and 〃let their fingers do the walking〃 through the Yellow Pages。 From the first 〃hello；〃 customers receive a courteous response to their questions。 This initial contact can help them decide where to shop。
